The 34th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Landstorm Nederland was a division of the Waffen-SS during World War II. It was composed of Dutch volunteers who were recruited from occupied Netherlands to fight for Nazi Germany. The division was formed in January 1945, and it was mainly used for occupation duties in Denmark and Germany, in addition to some combat actions against the advancing Allied forces.
The Landstorm Nederland division was made up of approximately 11,000 men, mostly Dutch, and its command staff were German. Its soldiers wore an SS uniform with a Dutch national emblem on the collar tabs. The division was involved in several notable battles during the final months of the war, including the Battle of the Harz Mountains and the Battle of Berlin.
The Landstorm Nederland division was known for its extreme brutality towards civilians and prisoners of war. It was involved in numerous war crimes, including the massacre of over 300 Polish civilians in Wola, Warsaw, and the killing of American prisoners of war during the Battle of the Bulge.
The division surrendered to the Allies in May 1945, and many of its members were prosecuted for war crimes during the subsequent trials. The division's involvement in the war continues to be a controversial topic in the Netherlands.
